To Paint or not to paint, any suggestions?

Good morning all. I am needing some advice on
what to do with this. Should I paint
it or not? The wood is so nice, but plain. Should
I paint it or just leave it as is and add a label to
the lid? I would appreciate any input you have.
At first I thought this was a bread box, but it
is too small. So I am guessing it is a mail box
or candle box. What would you do?

Hope your Saturday is a productive one.
I am off to the sewing room to dig out more goodies.

  1. I am not a good one to reply but I will.lol I would not paint it. It is beautiful just the way it is. The top looks rough sawn, so it may have some age on it. I can't tell in the picture, but it is beautiful, just the way it is.

  2. Tamera, This is just my opinion, I would spray paint it flat black, paint with a taupe/putty color, sand to distress it a little and then add a coat of Briwax. I LOVE Briwax. Of course I'm saying taupe since that's my new mantra (as you know from reading my last post!) Can't wait to see it if you do a redo. ~Ann

  3. Tamera, I would paint it, but that's me! Flat black followed by a taupe, putty color. Then distress it a little with sandpaper and finish with a coat of Briwax. I love what Briwax does to a redo project. Can't wait to see what you decide to do and where you decide to put it. ~Ann

  4. I always wonder about this too Tamera! It's a pretty wood grain, but I like Ann's idea of how to paint it. Pls let us know how it turns out ~*~Lisa

  6. Ohhhhh!!! I would LOVE to get my hands on that as a painting surface!!! I can just picture what I would put on it!!! The wood is nice, but I think you should paint it with black over red, sand, and stain with walnut stain.I always rub a white candle on the edges on the base color, paint the top color, then sand--the top color just chips off where the candle was rubbed. It will look great whatever you decide to do!-Jan

  7. I would leave it alone. The wood is beautiful and I think it is good to have a combination of colors and woods. And, if you paint it, you will never see that beautiful wood again. There will be plenty of things begging for paint but few that are beautiful on their own.
I figure you are leaning toward natural wood or you wouldn't have asked what to do. You are trying convince yourself that it is beautiful already! Listen to your heart. Make you happy.

  8. Oh Tamera I love the keeping box..but I agree it is plain..but of course the creator in me would think that!
I personally would do one of two things but both would start with sanding the box totally down getting rid of the shinny look..then choose to paint it or simply oil it with Old English dark Scratch cover. If you Oil it then I'd make sure the edges were sanded more to give it a more distressed look..
Then I would put either an aged doily behind the heart or in front of it or put a picture behind it. I'd label it Tallow Candles and fill it with grungy candles..display it open with the candles showing..
Ok that was my creative mind at work..you ask...giggle and if you ask the creativ mind to be creative it will be as you well know...

    Have a great wekeend!

PS..you could also fill it with rag wrapped Eggs & a Prim Bunny for Easter...after you finish it...How cute would that be?

  9. Tamara, I like it the way it is, but I love the look of old wood. I would use it in a grouping, probably with a piece of old coverlet or quilt draped over the side and some grubby candles inside.

  10. Hmmm.... I really don't know... I like all the suggestions that were given, lol!! So I guess I would say try it for awhile like it is. You might decide later that you would rather have it painted. It's a nice piece.

    Have a wonderful weekend~

  11. The wood grain is pretty. I love seeing all the colored wood in other blogs. I have a hard time painting over wood with such grain detail. My thoughts are sand the gloss off then rub down with an oil. You could paint it after if you still have a tugging from the heart. Blessings!

  12. Hi Tamera: If it's not that old, I'd say paint and antique it. It has a wonderful shape and my two cents is painting and antiquing would give it more character. ~Roberta

  14. Oh Tamera I just saw on another post Martha Stewart came out with these wonderful chalkboard labels that you can put on and remove and restick to something else ~ I wonder how that would work on your wonderful covered box???
You'll have to show us what you do with it!

  16. Playing a little catch-up here - sorry I'm so behind. And guess it doesn't matter b/c I'm not going to be much help....I, personally, tend to prefer the painted finishes with distressing; however, I have a HECK of a time messing with wood as pretty as this is. That's why I don't do so well at that part of "primness"....Best of luck in your decision-making! Smiles & Hugs ~ Robin
